NEC completes submarine cable between Kochi and Lakshadweep Islands for BSNL

NEC Corporation India (NEC India) has completed a flagship optical submarine cable system in Southern India connecting Kochi and the Lakshadweep Islands.

The Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Cable (KLI), developed under the Government of India’s ‘Digital India’ Mission, was inaugurated recently by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The initiative was first announced by Modi during a speech commemorating India’s 74th Independence Day in 2020, during which the Prime Minister pledged that the route would be completed within 1000 days.

Funded by the Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF) under the Department of Telecommunications, the project was executed by state-owned operator BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited), which awarded the contract to NEC India in September 2021.

Completed ahead of schedule in June 2023, the system spans approximately 1,870 kilometres and offers an initial capacity of 2×100 Gbps, expandable up to 1,600 Gbps per fibre pair. It connects the port city of Kochi on the mainland to 11 Lakshadweep islands: Agatti, Andrott, Amini, Bangaram, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kavaratti, Kiltan, Kelpeni, and Minicoy.

Providing ample bandwidth for voice and data connectivity, the cable supports e-Governance initiatives, facilitates new enterprises, and enables e-commerce facilities. Aligned with the Digital India Mission, it aids knowledge sharing in educational institutes and ensures electronic access to Government services for citizens.

“Following the successful completion of an optical submarine cable system connecting Chennai, India and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands (A&N Islands) in December 2020, NEC is honoured to yet again take part in this prestigious project which we hope will open a wide range of opportunities for the people on the Lakshadweep Islands,” said Atsushi Kuwahara, Managing Director, Submarine Network Division, NEC.

NTT announces new data centre campus in Delhi NCR

Global IT infrastructure and services company NTT has announced the launch of a new data centre campus, Noida 2, and the opening of its first data centre on the campus.

Spanning six acres, the campus will support a planned capacity of 52.8 MW critical IT load in two data centres.

The campus is in Noida’s data centre corridor within the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR), one of India’s largest and fastest-growing economic centres. It is carrier neutral, interconnected with NTT’s other data centre locations for minimal latency and offers seamless access to top-tier public cloud providers.

Its advanced features include high levels of automation that monitor and optimise facility performance and resources like power and water.

The first data centre, delivered this week, will support 22.4 MW IT load with an area of approximately 28,000 square metres. NTT says this is the first data centre campus in India to incorporate seismic dampers, ensuring uninterrupted operations even during significant seismic events.

NTT’s Global Data Centres division has now expanded its India footprint to more than 265 MW with 18 data centres across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru. 

NTT Global Data Centres employs advanced liquid cooling technologies, such as liquid immersion cooling and direct liquid cooling, ensuring clients can deploy the latest AI and high performance computer platforms in its data centres.

This news underlines continuing Indian data centre expansion, and the growing importance of the Indian market for many major players. As Doug Adams, CEO and President, NTT Global Data Centres & Submarine Cable, puts it: “India is a priority region in our global strategic roadmap of consistent capacity expansion in existing and new data centre markets.”

Smartfren and Aviat  partner to support private network rollout in Indonesia

An industry agreement intended to address industry digitalisation and automation in private networks across Indonesia has been signed by wireless transport and access solutions company Aviat Networks, and mobile operator Smartfren Telecom.

The partners aim to deliver high speed, ultra-reliable wireless connectivity, private wireless indoor and outdoor networks, and industry digitalisation and automation services to private network customers across Indonesia.

As private LTE and 5G network growth continues, this partnership will, we are told, leverage the capabilities of both companies to deliver IoT technology, 4G/5G private networks, and ICT solutions to Indonesian private networks and enterprises including hospitals, agriculture, mining, buildings, oil/gas companies, factories, smart cities and other vertical industries.

The objective of the agreement is to capture this market opportunity by enhancing the companies’ competitive positioning, and better serving Indonesian clientele through pre-sales and solution engineering, joint sales and market opportunity development, and integrated customer service and support.

As a result of its recent acquisition of NEC’s wireless transport business, Aviat says it is now the leading wireless transport provider in the Indonesian market and offers a comprehensive portfolio of wireless transport and access solutions, along with a local presence throughout the country.

Aviat will serve as solutions provider for all equipment and services related to Smartfren’s private networks offering.

With approximately 36 million subscribers at the end of 2022, Smartfren is the number four mobile operator in Indonesia and one of the ten largest in Southeast Asia.
